Connecticut
Connecticut has chosen a design for six frequently built park structures including visitor’s centers, camp offices, entry pavilions, toilet buildings and group shelters through a competition among 52 architects and five finalists. The statewide competition called for giving State parks buildings a uniform architectural theme, a style intended to be recognizable, comfortable and evocative of the landscape that blends harmoniously with both coastal dunes and inland forests and lakes.
The entries were judged on the basis of cost-effectiveness, ease of construction, and the use of appropriate building forms and natural materials. The winning designs are simple gabled buildings constructed of sturdy timber frames clad with wood shingles resting on stone foundations patterned after old mill buildings.
